Hurricane Katrina Relief September 2005

After the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in the fall of 2005, hundreds of displaced and homeless people came to the city of Athens seeking refuge.  Many settled temporarily in the First Baptist Church recreation outreach center and the First Christian Church Youth Camp.

A call went out into the community for volunteers to serve these Katrina refugees, many who had lost everything they owned because of the storm.  Red Dot employees stepped up and answered this call.  We learned that the women and children at the recreation center desperately needed a larger shower facility to use during the few weeks they would be living there.  So our people came out in force and used their tremendous construction skills to build them a very nice air conditioned shower facility that they attached to the back of the church building.  Red Dot also had a volunteer team head out to the youth camp to quickly build a large temporary washeteria which allowed the hurricane evacuees living there to wash their clothes during their month long stay in Athens.
