On Sunday morning as I looked around the room at the married
couples who were sitting arm in arm I was reminded of why the Red Dot 100X
marriage retreat is so important.
As couples arrived Friday night at Pine Cove, there was a spirit of
hesitancy as couples walked into the first of four marriage workshops not knowing exactly what they had gotten themselves into, but as time went by and laughter
was shared, everyone settled in for a great weekend together.
Jeff and Cheryl Scruggs of Hope Matters Marriage Ministries,
once again our guest speakers for the retreat weekend, shared their touching
and poignant story of their marriage, divorce, and remarriage that prefaced the
whole weekend with a model of Christ’s forgiveness and hope. The Scruggs shared their God given
wisdom throughout the three sessions on Saturday, challenging couples at the
end of each session to spend a few moments alone talking through related
questions.
After the sessions with Jeff and Cheryl, three great meals, the
Not-so-Newlywed game, canoeing, coffee at the Caribou Café, zip lining, horseback
riding, Family Feud, and a perfect campfire to finish off a very full Saturday,
a sense of family had definitely begun to set in. As the retreat came to an end hopefully 
everyone left encouraged
and having a deeper understanding of the calling God has for marriage and the
unique relationship between a husband and wife. And we were all reminded that every marriage needs effort,
care, and lots of laughter along the way.
